"BE READY FOR ANYTHING."

ABOUT

Welcome to the 17th Annual ARE Adventure Race! Created in 2006, it was exclusively for the crazy ARE-ers staying at Dippikill for the weekend and a chance for them to earn bragging rights for not being afraid to submerge themselves in water under ice, climb trees, and not even know how far they are going. This is NOT a safe event. It is not an event with a "few" obstacles separated by open fields and easy access to help you in an emergency. It's an utterly unnecessary event for which you could be horrifically injured with no need to participate in the first place. Sound like your kind of event? Join us. If not, check out one of our other more normal events.

AMENITIES

Getting to dance on the dirt and possibly snow with your fellow crazies. It's an opportunity to punish yourself for eating too much at Thanksgiving and the impending doom of the imminent holidays. Other than that and perhaps some food, we are giving you nothing except for scars. If you are crying when you finish, use toilet paper to wipe away your tears. There are no awards. Just painful memories.

PETS & STROLLERS

You are not permitted to participate with pets or strollers. And while it is OK to bring them, we do not recommend it; the general atmosphere of this event is ADULT-ONLY.

VOLUNTEER

Help make it happen! Please be aware, though, that volunteering for this event requires you to be outdoors on what will probably be a cold day. But it's also pretty awesome. :)

COURSE

OVERVIEW

YOU WILL NOT KNOW THE DISTANCE OF THE RACE UNTIL YOU FINISH IT.

We mostly guarantee that it is between 4 miles and 8 miles. You will encounter no artificial obstacles, but Mother Nature can be a real you know what. Several individuals mark different sections of the course, choosing ANY ROUTE they desire between any points they desire. True 'trails' have no baring on the course. Expect upwards of half the race to be bushwhacking, along with climbing large boulders and even scaling trees, fording nearly frozen swamps, and walking across ice you pray doesn't break. The course is different every year; both in route and length. And again, as no one person is responsible for marking the whole course, not a single person knows the full route NOR distance prior to finishing the race.

CUT-OFFS

There is no formal cut-off, but we do ask that you only choose to participate if you are capable of lifting your own bodyweight and sufficiently fit to potentially withstand several hours outside in the freezing cold. The nature of this event makes it basically impossible to drop-out; you need to TRULY BE READY - which means ideally have winter hiking experience in deep snow.

ON COURSE AID

There is none. Your survival rests in your own hands.
