ABOUT

The Hairy Gorilla Half Marathon & Squirrelly Six (.3*) Mile is part running race, part costume party, and is truly among the most unique events you'll ever do! Be on the look out for gorillas that have gone bananas, nutty squirrels, graves with your own names on them, and other inanity to keep you smiling and enjoying the beautiful views that await!

Join us in 2025 for our 21st year of festive running mayhem at an event that has been dubbed the Best Costume Trail Race in America by Runnersworld!

OVERVIEW

The 2025 race start/finish area has moved slightly from 2024!

The event will utilize the same new course as what was used for the 2025 Thacher Park Trail Running Festival, staged from Hailes Cave Pavilion. This uses the same parking lot prior year HGH/SS participants have used and is a return to the staging location used prior to 2015.

Note: The Squirrelly Six Mile is now the Squirrelly Six (point ~3) Mile. Save some juice for that extra portion! (The Hairy Gorilla remains 13.1)

This is a trail race, run entirely on the property of John Boyd Thacher State Park. Both the Squirrelly Six and Hairy Gorilla Half are run simultaneously on the same course, using the same courses as the 10K/Half Marathon at the Thacher Park Trail Running Festival.
THE FIRST 6 MILES
The race begins heading north on a gentle grass field / the 'Long Path' and is basically flat/non-technical for the first 1.75 miles. Once at the Hang Glide Cliff (1.75M), the race becomes single track for the first time and also features some technical sections - be careful with your footing! Just past mile 5, the course merges with its first ~1.3M and follows that back to the start/finish area, where the Squirrelly Six runners finish and the HGH continues.
The LAST 7.1 MILES
The second part of the course begins with a beautiful stretch along the fence line of the park and runs past the overlook. It then crosses the street and begins a gradual ascent to run the trail parallel to Beaver Dam Road before a mostly downhill final 2 miles.

CUT-OFFS

The following requirements are in place based upon our permit and for the management of course volunteers and event operations.

COURSE MAP

Full Course Google Map (Shows both races on a single map)

Both races are run together. Everyone runs the same first 10K. From there, all doing the 13.1+ continue together to complete the 13.1.

(These are the same courses as used at our August Thacher Park Trail Running Festival.)
